{"id":4009,"date":"2021-09-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/websites4demo.com\/magazine-new\/articles\/the-roxy-rockin-since-the-70s\/"},"modified":"2024-11-15T13:10:16","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T13:10:16","slug":"the-roxy-rockin-since-the-70s","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/websites4demo.com\/magazine-new\/the-roxy-rockin-since-the-70s\/","title":{"rendered":"The Roxy, Rockin\u2019 Since the \u201870s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019re on a quest to eat our way up and down Highway 101 through all the restaurants in Encinitas.\u00a0 It\u2019s Date Night, and we\u2019re on Restaurant Number Two:\u00a0 The Roxy!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Knowing Your Encinitas History\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Longtime Encinitans may remember that <a href=\"http:\/\/roxyencinitas.com\">The Roxy<\/a> was originally an ice cream shop when it opened at 101 and D Street in 1978.\u00a0 My first visit was 1980.\u00a0 It was a Friday night, and I was in 7<sup>th<\/sup> grade with a group of girls, thinking we were \u201call that\u201d in our disco shorts, knee-high socks and roller skates!\u00a0 (Shh, don\u2019t tell Mom!)\u00a0\u00a0 As the years rolled by, the ice cream shop transitioned, slipping sandwiches and smoothies onto their menu, and adding places to hang out.<\/p>\n<p>In my 20&#8217;s, I spent many afternoons laughing with friends and enjoying The Roxy\u2019s smoothies, sprout sandwiches, and chips and salsa.\u00a0 When life took me away from Encinitas, I always made sure to drop in whenever I came home for a visit.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, The Roxy had a makeover.\u00a0 Now it\u2019s a restaurant and bar with a 1920\u2019s vibe, live music,\u00a0craft cocktails, and an upscale but fun menu\u2026 just in time for me to move back to Encinitas with my new husband!\u00a0 It has become one of our go-to places for cocktails, small plates, and tasty entr\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Chillin\u2019 On the Roxy Lot<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On this overcast Saturday night, we make reservations for the back lot, which is a funky outdoor seating area added in response to COVID.\u00a0 Roxy set it up with fire pits and a second stage for live music (besides the one inside).\u00a0 Someone strung up a (wink-nudge) \u201cFrench Laundry\u201d banner on the fence!\u00a0 Our server offers to light the fire pit, but it\u2019s already plenty warm tonight.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1255\" style=\"width: 624px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1255 size-full\" title=\"A Band playing music at the Roxy in Encinitas\" src=\"https:\/\/theglobalassist.com\/yourhomedesigncenter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Tsunami-Sound-Wave-Band.jpg\" alt=\"Band playing music\" width=\"624\" height=\"452\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tsunami Sound Waves is our soundtrack for the evening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Our musical diversion for the eve: <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/0aW6RaCDAKNTywBMqa7Bni?si=_0ISsvfWSkuLBNjVXLUDtg&amp;dl_branch=1\">Tsunami Sound Waves<\/a>, a Pacific Beach band playing a wide variety of cover songs and their own originals (a cross-pollination of rock and reggae).&nbsp; They explain they are just two of the five usual members, but they really jam!&nbsp; They even stop at our table for a chat between sets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To cool us off on this humid, slightly stuffy evening, we order our favorite cocktails.&nbsp; Mine is the Paloma, a refreshing drink made with tequila and grapefruit.&nbsp; Hubby\u2019s standby is the Old Fashioned, made with whiskey and bitters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At appetizer time, we go a little wild and decide to skip our usual go-to favorites, opting instead for the Pork Belly Adobo.&nbsp; We expect a BBQ-type dish, but instead it\u2019s a nice surprise to taste Roxy\u2019s version with an Asian twist!&nbsp; The pork belly is sliced and served with white rice, soft boiled egg, scallions, and a hint of soy.
